The venerable V-Strom 650 is a very capable adventure mount, but one look at the front of the engine and you can see why a quality skid plate is such an important addition. Right out there in the open just waiting to be dented or punctured by a mischievous rock or branch are the oil filter, exhaust and starter with the engine cases not far behind.
Our Happy Trails Products skid plate is designed specifically to fit the V-Strom's. We use adventure proven 3/16 inch aluminum to provide critical protection for all key components at the front, sides, and of course bottom of the motor. All of our HTP skid plates are CNC cut, bent, and hand-welded at our factory in Boise, Idaho, before applying black powder coat.

MK-2 HTP7-5-88-MK2 mounting kit is the correct one for your crash bars. Please see this link to the instructions with pictures.

There are three different mount kits depending on the engine gurds you have.
When you click here "Select or Purchace mount hardware" it will indicate the hardware you need.
Yes you will need to remove the skid plate for an oil change.
There should not be any issues, use the (more expensive) Givi Kit.
Yes it will work on that model, the frame is the same.
The height of the bar and the diameter are the keys. Can you take some pictures of the bar and measure the diameter?

The Happy Trails Skid Plate fits excellently on the DL650. The skid plate used in the Rider article was intended for the DL650, not the DL1000. We did have a slight fitment issue when we first released the product, but has since been resolved. We have had no known fitment issues since the correction in 2014.
