The venerable V-Strom 650 is a very capable adventure mount, but one look at the front of the engine and you can see why a quality skid plate is such an important addition. Right out there in the open just waiting to be dented or punctured by a mischievous rock or branch are the oil filter, exhaust and starter with the engine cases not far behind.

Our Happy Trails Products skid plate is designed specifically to fit the V-Strom's. We use adventure proven 3/16 inch aluminum to provide critical protection for all key components at the front, sides, and of course bottom of the motor. All of our HTP skid plates are CNC cut, bent, and hand-welded at our factory in Boise, Idaho, before applying black powder coat.

  • 3/16" aluminum plate which is 100% welded for maximum strength, not riveted together like some competitors

  • Designed to help protect all the critical areas of the oil system, engine, and exhaust

  • Strategically placed vent holes for air flow to the oil cooler and lower engine while maintaining strength and protection

  • Four mounting points for secure attachment. (2 frame, 2 crash bars)

  • Black Hammertone powder coat finish is standard.

  •  Skid Plate and center-stand are compatible.

Fitment Note: Our skid plate requires the use of either OEM or our crash bars/engine guards for the front mount points.

Mount Kit Compatibility Note: Select MK1 for Happy Trails Nerf Bars, GIVI TN532 crash guards, and AltRider crash bars. Select MK2 for the DL650XT Adventure Model with OEM engine guards and Select MK3 for SW-Motech engine guards.  **  If your SW Motech crash bar has the center clamp you need the MK-3 mount kit.  If you have the bolt together type, you will need the MK-2 mount kit. **

  • Does the skid plate need to be removed ENTIRELY in order to change the oil? Here's why I ask: The skid plate is attached at two points: (1) the OEM crash bar and (2) the rear mount plate. If the bolts that secure the skid plate to the rear mount plate are removed, it looks like the skid plate can be rotated away from the bottom of the engine in order to grant access for an oil change.
Question by: Marcus on 2017-10-06 01:08:00

    That should work just fine.

Answer by: Tim on 2017-10-05 21:08:00

  • How well does this skid plate mount to the DL1000 compared to the DL650? Rider Magazine had some concerns about fitment on the DL1000 and was curious how it fit on the DL650.
Question by: Zach on 2016-01-26 03:57:00

The Happy Trails Skid Plate fits excellently on the DL650. The skid plate used in the Rider article was intended for the DL650, not the DL1000. We did have a slight fitment issue when we first released the product, but has since been resolved. We have had no known fitment issues since the correction in 2014.
