KTM 950/990 Skid Plate

The KTM 950 and 990 Adventures are serious off road machines capable of covering great expanses of rough terrain for some riders in a surprisingly short period of time. Such a potent combination requires a quality skid plate that is up to the job. You probably know someone, or have had the unfortunate first hand experience of what happens to a stock thin cast aluminum and plastic skid plate that got a little too up close and personal with a nice sized rock or tree stump.

Our Happy Trails skid plate is designed specifically to fit the 950 and 990 Adventure. It provides critical protection for the front mounted battery, oil filter housing, engine side cases, and the thing you REALLY don't want to break that side stand switch. Made from adventure proven 3/16" aluminum plate, we cut, bend, and hand weld everything at our factory in Boise, Idaho, before applying an attractive, yet durable powder coat finish. We think you will agree this hammertone style finish complements every KTM color scheme.

Tim Sez: Our years of experience in KLR skid plate manufacture has taught us a number of lessons in impact dissipation. Our original skid plates were made from 3/16" aluminum plate as a compromise between strength and weight. After a few years we started receiving customer comments that the skid plates were being damaged due to impacts. Our initial solution to this problem was adding additional aluminum plate to the bottom of the skid plate, giving us a full 3/8" of aluminum under the motorcycle. Unfortunately, this additional thickness didn't resolve the issue as we were still getting reports of damaged plates. Our final solution was to introduce thick rubber matting which compressed between the engine case and the skid plate itself. This allowed the shock to be spread out over a much larger area, reducing the risk of skid plate and case damage. We've done this to our personal bikes and sold it as an option for customers for several years. We've taken this idea one step further with our new KTM 950/990 skid plate with a large rubber block in the center of the plate to disperse impacts without adding more weight than necessary.
