Problems occur when the workload on the rear frame is too high, like after a jump, when riding with heavy luggage/passenger, or riding fast on very rough roads. The rear frame can break the transmission case.

The broken transmission case is no longer covered by BMW warranty on this older 1100, and the only solution is this hard part, developed by TOURATECH in 1996 and still the standard. So far, no GS has broken a transmission with this part installed.

Another concern on the 1100 is the footpeg support. Impact forces can break the transmission case if the footpeg hits an immovable rock (during a fall for example). The Hard Part GV transfers these forces into the frame rather than into the transmission case.The Hard Part GV is considered an essential accessory for any R1100GS used on rough terrain.
